DeepEco - Transforming recycling of waste plastics in recycling facilities using innovative computer vision with novel AI software and incorporated robotics.

The project, coordinated by Greyparrot, aims to integrate deep learning vision into state of the art robot manipulation for efficient waste sorting in recycling facilities.

The main responsibility of Middlesex University within the project is to integrate vision into the robotic system to physically sort waste items. We will be setting up a simple replica of a recycling facility working environment in which to test vision algorithms. We will add estimation of pose, size and shape of items, and establish routines to control the robot manipulator according to the outcome of visual processing. Different solutions for manipulators and end effectors will be tested and evaluated.

The post

We are recruiting an Engineer with experience in robotics, and ideally in AI and Vision, too.

The candidate will work on research activities related to the DeepEco project, and support senior researchers as necessary, to enable the delivery of the intended results, and to the benefit of the School, the University and the wider community.

After the end of the project, there is a strong likelihood for further involvement with Greyparrot on a full-time basis.

Main responsibilities

Program a robot system to integrate vision and object handling into a unified framework.
Test deep learning algorithms for visual recognition at Middlesex University.
Test and choose the most appropriate end effector(s) and robot arm according to task.
Contribute to the production of research reports and academic publications.
Liaise with project and programme partners internally and externally.
Provide support to the project such as organisation of events and dissemination.
Potentially assist in student supervision and teaching activities.

Essential requirements

MEng/MSc in Robotics Engineering or similar (e.g. AI, Mechatronics, Automation).
Evidence of work supporting progress within an academic or industrial environment.
Proven knowledge and skills in robotics programming and control (e.g. Python, C++, Java).

Desirable requirements

Proven knowledge and skills in Machine Learning.
Proven knowledge and skills in Computer Vision.
Ability to communicate effectively within a team and externally, in writing and orally.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
